Vintage Leather & Hammered Copper Ashtray With Scalloped Base

A vintage ashtray or vide poche with a scalloped leather base and a hammered copper insert, an unusual combination of materials that works better in person than it sounds on paper.

The base is a thick, molded leather piece in a warm reddish-brown tone, formed into a rounded scallop edge with four small lobed feet. The interior holds a separately fitted hammered copper bowl with a crimped, serrated rim that locks it in place. The copper has developed a warm patina, the inside shows the natural color variation that comes from use and age, ranging from bright gold to deeper amber tones.

It's a functional piece, ashtrays and catchalls of this type were common on mid-century European desks and side tables, but the material combination gives it more visual interest than most. The leather base softens what could otherwise be a purely utilitarian object.

The back is a tall channel-tufted panel with softly flared wings, and the arms curve outward. The seat cushions are new, in a deep brown fabric with piping, which grounds all the pattern.
